10 Things I Learned From My First IG Loop Giveaway

A few weeks ago, I was able to participate in a $1,000 PayPal Cash IG Loop Giveaway.  It was an interesting experience and I learned a lot in a short amount of time, so of course I wanted to share it all with you today.

Ok, first of all....what the heck is an IG loop giveaway?  It's a giveaway several people participate in (usually bloggers) to get more followers on their Instagram account in a short amount of time.  All participants pay to join the giveaway, which helps pay for the prize.  This price can vary depending on the prize and how many people are participating.

The loop part comes in on the day of the giveaway.  Each blogger posts the same giveaway photo, rules and who to follow next under the photo all at the same time.  The entrees will have to follow all IG profiles participating until they return to the original post they started with, and the "loop" is complete.

I had no ideas these giveaways even existed but I can tell you they are really exciting and helpful.  Here are 10 things I learned from my very first one.

1)  Make sure you're participating in a legit giveaway.
I have to admit that I was kind of skeptical giving my personal information to a total stranger.  And I even thought, more than once, what if it was all a scam.  Luckily I was participating in a legit giveaway and I had an awesome host (Melanie from The Story of Five) that put this whole thing together!  (You can check out her IG Loop Giveaway group here.)

If you want to verify the giveaway, make sure you visit the website of the hosts to make sure they are legit.  Also, see if they've done past giveaways on their IG profiles and verify there were no complaints and a winner was announced.  A great blogger that I actually follow, had recommended the giveaway and stated they participated in one with Melanie before and loved it.  That's what made me trust this giveaway.

2)  You will gain a lot of followers fast.
I went from a little over 300 to about 1100 in the few days this giveaway went live!

3)  When it's all over, you will see your followers start dropping.
When the giveaway is over and your followers find out they did not win, you usually start loosing those followers fast.  I went from 1174 followers to 994 and still dropping.  (This was in a two week range.)  Don't let this discourage you, though.

4)  People make accounts just to enter these giveaways.
These people are usually the people who unfollow you first.  If you see an account that only has one or two pictures, have little to no one following them yet follow hundreds or thousands of people and has their profile set to private, more than likely they just follow for giveaways and will unfollow you right after.

5)  It's a good idea to prepare your IG profile for before, during and after the IG giveaway.
Make sure you have some great photos posted before the IG giveaway and maybe even have some handy for during and a little while after.  Plan something big to keep those followers interested and wanting to stick around.  You can just take a bunch of photos one day of various things so you don't have to worry about what to post.  Scheduling a few great blog posts to go live around that time will also help you with this.

6)  Make sure to follow and connect with fellow IG Bloggers.
This is one I wish I would have worked a little more on.  Although I did find some new bloggers to follow, I don't feel I made a true connection with them.  And let's be honest, these things a great for gaining followers but they can also be awesome for making long lasting blog friends!  I plan to work on this on my next one.

7)  Other IG giveaway pages will start contacting you to join other giveaways....like asap!
I had about 2 or 3 contact me after the first day!  They emailed me, private messaged me on IG and even tagged me in a photo asking if I would like to join.

8)  Wait a while before joining another.
I personally have decided to wait about a month before I join my next IG Loop Giveaway.  I feel by then I would have established some true followers and I won't have people just sticking around waiting for the next giveaway.  I mean, I love giving away free stuff, but I would also love IG followers who take interest in what I post about...other than giveaways.

9)  It's a great way to get more interaction on your IG.
Not only did I gain lots of followers within the first hour, I also noticed a lot of photo likes and comments being left.  These are great opportunities to engage with your audience and one reason why you want to have your best photos up before the giveaway starts.

10)  It feels great to give something away.
When I heard that we made the winner of our IG Loop Giveaway cry happy tears, I felt so awesome!  I never spoke to them personally, but it was truly awesome to know we were able to make someone's day that probably never thought they would win in the first place.

A few takeaways...have fun with it and take advantage of all the new traffic coming to your IG profile.  Make sure to have your web link in the bio with a short description of you and your blog, and post some photos directing them to your bio to maximize the traffic you are receiving.  Know that you will get a lot of followers but expect that number to drop.  And under no circumstances should you feel bad about that number dropping.  You will more than likely have more followers than what you started off with.  400 true followers are way better than 1,000 fake followers...always remember that!

Having an IG Loop Giveaway has it's pros and cons, so the decision to be a part of one or not is entirely up to you.  I truly loved my first one and thought it was a great way to gain new readers quickly and connect, so I plan to participate in one again in the future.

  1. I always wondered how those worked for the non-shop IG accounts. Thanks for sharing. Did you find that it helped drive traffic to your blog as well?

    1. Hi Candace. Great question and I wish I could really answer it, but I did several things at this time to try and increase traffic to my blog, so I'm not sure if this was partly cause to that. I didn't see the Instagram name come up in my blog traffic report, but I have gotten a few comments on my Instagram about posts and more likes on my photos after doing the giveaway. I started off with just about 3-5 (organic) likes per day and it started to increase to 12 or more during and after the giveaway.

    1. Thank you Cathy! I haven't seen any stats supporting that I get followers from IG directly, but I have had more comments on my post photos on IG about what my blog posts were about. This leads me to believe that they've made their way to the post one way or another. Plus, also keep in mind if they like what they see, they will follow you on your other social media platforms too, so you can gain more exposure that way also.

  4. A really informative post. I've thought about joining some of these but then I wonder, are these people really following me because they like my IG, or are they following me for free stuff?? I guess since you kept an additional 500 people, that kind of answers the question! Happy Easter and thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop!

    1. Hello Angelina! I actually had an IG follower comment on this photo on IG. They said they found me through the loop and continued to follow me because they liked what I was posting. Even if I lose more than half the followers I gained, I still think it's a great way to put yourself out there so others can quickly find you and see what you are about.

    1. Hello Erin. I heard about the loop giveaway when Melanie posted it in one of the FB blog groups I'm in. She was really organized and everything went smoothly. I also liked that she was available for any questions we had. Thanks for stopping by and I'll see you for the link party soon!
