My Secret For Unlimited Post Ideas

I've been blogging off and on for about 4 years now and one of the things that I've struggled most with is content.  Coming up with things to write about on a weekly basis is hard.  In the past, I had no way of keeping track of all the ideas I had in my head.  By the time I would actually sit down in front of the computer to write out the thought I had in my head, it was gone.  Or, I would write down my thoughts but they were scattered in three different places and would get lost.

This year I vowed to myself to at least post one post ever single week!  So, I did something a little different.  I finally made a blog post journal!

What I have In It

This spiral notebook might not look so important, but it holds 200+ post ideas for me to write about (and counting), that's a lot of content!  Some posts might make it on the blog while others will never be seen at all, but you can bet I will at least have one post every week this year thanks to this little notebook!

This notebook is only filled with blogpost ideas.  If I have any other blog ideas, like coming up with a blog post schedule, I make sure to write it down in another notebook.  This really keeps everything organized.

To give you an idea of what's in it and how I use it, I made an example below in another journal with a few of my posts I've already written or will publish soon.  (I can't give all my secrets away :)

How I Use It

Every week I go through my journal and decide what posts I will write about for the next week.  When I've written about one of the topics, I cross it off the list.

I usually have this notebook handy but for those rare occasions that I don't, I will write my ideas on my phone or another piece of paper.  Then, transfer those notes to this notebook so everything can still be in one place.  I also make it a point to come up with at least 3 new blog posts every week to add to this journal, to keep the creative posts going.

The important thing about this notebook is that I have it numbered. I don't scramble around and every page is filled up before moving on to the next.  This really keeps all my thoughts in order.  It also helps me find something I want to write about because I don't have to guess where one post idea starts and the other begins, the numbers help with that.

If you're a blogger and have not started one of these, I will highly recommend it.  I'm a visual person, so I need to see things right in front of me, especially to remember about them.  You could, however, make a virtual blog post journal by posting your ideas in the notes section on your phone and computer, or creating new post titles directly on your blog and then writing the post when you're ready.

So, how has this been working for me so far?  Great!  I have so many ideas flowing at the moment and I cannot believe I've already have 200+ ideas and it's just the second month of the year! Even though not all of these ideas will make it to the blog, it makes me feel secure that I have at least one post for every week!

Do you have a blog post journal?  What other writing tips do you have for never running out of things to write about?

  2. A blog post journal is a great idea. I use the NOTES section on my iPhone for basically doing the same thing. I like having it on my phone cause if I get an idea while at the grocery store I can jot it down really quick. I love all your posts lately! :)

  5. Love this! I do something similar but mine is a section in my blogging binder - it's SO useful, especially for pre-writing posts and creating an editorial calendar!

  7. When I think of post ideas, I type in my notes on my phone... but then I just started making drafts of posts on my blog instead. I think a notebook would probably be a better idea! Thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things Blog Hop!

    1. Hi Angelina! I did drafts too at one point. What I noticed was they would get lost on the very bottom and I would focus more on the ones on top. Seeing them in my journal and actually being able to cross things out and turn pages has been working a lot better for me.
