Gorgeous DIY Makeup Mat

(This post contains affiliate links.  Please read more about this here.)

The other day I was putting on my makeup (nothing too fancy) when I noticed my powder all over my dresser.  Sadly, this wasn't the first time this has happened.  This actually happens every time I put my makeup on.

I knew I needed a solution!  I wanted something that could be cleaned easily but not a towel and it had to cost me zero money.  Luckily I just bought a very nice shelf liner and decided it would do the trick for a simple mat.  This project turned out more gorgeous than I ever thought!

Here's how you can make your very own makeup mat.  (I promise you it's easier than you think!)

I found a shoe box lid that was the perfect size and used an X-Acto knife to cut the sides of the lid on top of a cutting mat.  (I needed something to protect the surface under my workspace, so the cutting pad was the perfect thing.)

When I was done, I traced the cardboard on this beautiful shelf liner.  Make sure to trace both sides together so you can cover both front and back at once.  (Easy so far, right?)

Then it was time for my washi tap!  I picked this beauty up about a year ago and was saving it for just the right project.  After covering the cardboard, I realized this washi tape would look perfect for the edges.  It really cleans it up and gives it a fancier look, don't you think?  Almost like the mat is in a mental frame.  (The perfect touch!)

What I love about this project

This little mat is just perfect for my makeup!  Not only is it gorgeous, it's also so easy to clean.  Even if I did leave my powder scattered on it, I know the surface would stay clean.

Don't you just love a simple DIY project?  And you can use it for anything, not just makeup.  I have to be honest when I tell you that these photos really do not do this mat justice!  It's way more beautiful in person.

Will you be making this lovely mat too?

I've linked this post up at these parties!

  1. I did something similiar to a craft cart a few years back (put contact paper/clear sheet liner on the top so any paints or glues would wipe right off). It works a like a charm, and an easy way to add a little something extra (for my craft cart, I put some pretty scrapbook paper under the clear liner). If I had the space to have a makeup mat (ha!) I would totally do this, as I am horrendously messy when it comes to makeup!

    1. Hi Jessica! That craft cart sounds lovely!! I love contact paper and love that it can be used for so many things! My mat isn't that big, but you can change the size depending on what you need.

  2. What a cute idea - I too get powder and makeup all over my bathroom sink then I have to clean it up. Pinning for later, super crafty! Found you at LFEO!

    1. I'm glad you like it. :) I saw the silicone mats, but I needed something right away, and I didn't know where I could go buy one. I had never seen one before until I googled makeup mats.

  5. Such a cute idea! I always make such a mess when I do my makeup, I got a desk with a glass top specifically so it would be easy to clean!

  6. Really adorable mat, Jessica! My makeup always gets all over my counters - especially since I use a loose powder. Great color choice too!

    1. It is so easy! I think it took me longer to write this post than to do the actual project. And thank you so much for liking this project and the file cabinet, which by the way is also really easy to do. :)
