6 Things To Clean Before Your Vacation - Come Back To A Fresh & Clean Home

The week has finally come!  The week I have been waiting for many months!  This Friday we head to Austin for our three day vacation / Color Run!

Even though I'm very excited, there is much to do this week.  One thing I'm trying to tackle before we leave is cleaning the house....yes I said cleaning the house.  No I'm not crazy, I just like coming home to a clean house.

Here's what we clean before we head off on our trips.

Laundry:  I do laundry probably 2-3 days before we leave.  This way there will be less clothes to wash when we come home from our trip.  It also helps with packing, since I usually pack 2-3 days before a trip.  Everything is nice and washed and I can pic the perfect outfits for us since all the clothes are washed.

Bed Sheets:  I like to wash our bed sheets a couple of days before leaving too.  If possible, even the day before we leave so we can get a better nights sleep in our fresh/clean bed sheets.  It's also nice to come home to fairly fresh sheets on the bed and not have to worry about washing them until later.

Bathrooms:  Don't think I'm crazy here.  I don't mean scrub the whole bathroom top to bottom.  All I do is clean the toilet and the sink before we leave, it's really just a wipe down.  I also pull the shower to hid the tub, restock the toilet paper and put fresh new towels out.  It's so refreshing to come back from a trip and have our bathroom looking nice and sparkly!

Don't forget that you don't have to worry about forgetting any personal care items with my Ready-To-Pack Personal Care Travel Bag!  It makes leaving for a trip 10x easier!

Floors:  This one is pretty easy.  Just pick up anything off the floor that doesn't belong.  I put dirty clothes in hampers, toys where they belong and do a quick sweep for dirt and crumbs.

Trash:  This is an important one!  What ever you do, don't forget to take the trash out!  Last thing you want is to come back to a stinky home because you forgot to take out the garbage.

If you will be gone during your trash pickup day, make sure you get someone to take your trash can to the curb, or you can leave it out there yourself before you leave.

Kitchen:  One last room we need to cover.  It's the kitchen.  I make sure we raid our fridge for leftovers the week of our trip.  This equals less cooking or dirty dishes.  Plus, our food won't go spoiled.  If you still have leftover food or milk, see if you can freeze it until you come back.  (We usually freeze our store bought bread too.)  If not, then make sure to throw it out before you leave.

The dishes need to get done too.  You can run the dishwasher the night before your trip and leave them in there until you come back.  They will be nice and clean when you get back and ready to be put up.

So, that's pretty much everything we clean before we leave our house for a trip.  What things do you have on your list? Find more travel tips here!

I agree. I hate to come home to a dirty house. There is just something about walking in the door and breathing in the smell of a clean house. It's like returning to your home vacation.

  4. I am so bad at unpacking my bag when I return from a trip, I once kept clothes in a suitcase for 3 months after I had returned! I just kept using it as a drawer until all the clothes were taken out and put in the laundry LOL!

    1. Ugh! The unpacking struggle! I have that too. I usually just wash all my clothes once I get home even if I didn't wear them. I just feel like my clean clothes get dirty being in the suitcase cramped with other clothes that are dirty. It also makes it easier to fold and put everything up once I'm back.

  7. I always, always clean the house before we leave on vacation...it's something my mom did when we were growing up and I started doing once I had my own house. There's nothing better than coming home to a clean house and being able to relax because I usually feel like I need a vacation from my vacation!
