DIY File Cabinet Makeover - So Easy You Will Not Believe It!

If you have lots of papers then you probably have a file cabinet.  These one color objects (usually black) can be so boring and stick out like a sore thumb in any office.  I had one of these cabinets too until I figured out a way to totally transform it!

Believe me when I say it's not as hard as it looks.  No that is not painted on, no modge podge, and no stencil work either.  This is all wrapping paper and clear shelf liner, both from Target.  Here's how I did it.

1)  Measure the file cabinet drawers.  I knew I wanted the wrapping paper to be a little shorter all around so the clear shelf liner can stick.  I also cut a stencil using two pieces of cardstock paper.  This made it easier to trace onto the thin wrapping paper and cut the size I needed.

2)  Do the same with the clear shelf liner...measure, trace and cut.  This one should be the full size of the drawer.

3)  Place double sided tape on the corners and center of the cabinet where the wrapping paper will fall.  Then place the wrapping paper on top of the cabinets making sure to smooth it out so it is as flat as possible.

4)  Take your already cut shelf liner pieces and smooth them out on top.  Head here for my easy way to install shelf liner.  I used this to help me place the clear liner on the cabinet.

5)  Once the shelf liner is on and all smoothed out, use an X-acto knife to cut around the handles.  Mine were easy and I was able to just trace around them.  If there are extra shelf liner pieces hanging off the edge of the drawer then you can X-acto knife these off too.

After you are done you should have a nicely shelf lined cabinet!

I love this idea because if I get tired of this pattern it's so easy to change, I do not have to commit to it like the other choices above.

What do you think of this project?  Will you be trying it out soon?

  3. Such a small change but it's made such a big impact. I really like how your paper looks against the black. Unfortunately my filing cabinet is a plastic box...boring. This is the perfect project for our Two Uses Tuesday party. I'd love it if you linked up. http://www.purfylle.com/2015/04/two-uses-tuesday-link-up-23.html
