Welcome to today's 30 Day Neat & Tidy Challenge! Did you miss me yesterday? Life finally caught up to me this week, so it wasn't until later in the day when I realized I hadn't posted the challenge. But it's another wonderful day and a perfect one to do Day twelve's task, the entryway / command center!
The entryway is usually the first thing you see when you walk in the door to your house. This is basically the first impression you and everyone else gets of your house. It can set the mood for a smile through the door or a cringe all the way in, not to mention a bad mood.
How can you fix this? By doing just a few quick fixes.
-First, if you don't already have a command center then now would be a great time to set one up. It doesn't have to be anything big, just enough room to have a place for everything that ends up in this space. (Click here to hear my command center story.)
-Identify what items usually end up here. Is it keys and change, shoes, bags or paperwork?
-If paperwork is your problem, use a sorting basket for incoming mail. Have one for Pay, File, Shred or Get Back To. Go through the mail everyday and put paperwork where it belongs right away.
-Having a small table to put change and wallets is a great idea. Use small bowls or trays to separate everyone's items.
-Keys can go hung up on some hooks. You could use command hooks or thumb tacks for this or simply just buy a key organizer.
-Baskets are great for organizing every day shoes and winter accessories. Make a basket for each family member where they can quickly grab their gloves, hats scarves, sunglasses and even their own umbrella.
-Tame the bags by hanging them on the wall. Again, make sure everyone has their own hook to place their backpacks or purses (And maybe even their coats).
-Make sure you throw any trash out and take out any items that do not belong in this space.
-Have drawers here? Go through them and turn them into a useful space! Keep items like batteries, flashlights, candles and other household items you normally look for here so it can have a set place. You can even make a drawer for the family pet and keep leashes, sweaters, small toys and treats for them.
-If receipts are taking over your life, make sure to keep a small trashcan near this space or file them in a small accordion binder. This will force you to go through them at least once a week to either throw them or file them away.
-If you have a hard time remembering dates, you can hang a large calendar here so the family will know exactly what's going on for that day. You can take a quick look at it before walking out the door or check what's for dinner once you get in.
-Bulletin boards are great for hanging things like permission slips that need to get signs or appointments that need to be entered into the calendar. Hang up a small basket with thumbtacks to help place paperwork in and go through it every day. Enter all appointments right away and then file the paperwork where it goes.
-Don't forget to decorate! Fill this space with thing you love, like family photos on the wall or table and nicknacks that just make you smile. This will help create an inviting feeling as you walk in and put a smile on your face.
I hope these tips help you complete today's task! I can't wait to see everyone's entryway pictures!
