Play Kitchen Makeover

Oh, how I love FREE furniture on the side of the road!  One's "trash" is another's treasure, right?  And I'm about to show you mine!

It was close to my little girl's 2nd birthday and my husband and I were trying to find a play kitchen we liked so we could get it for her birthday...and then, I looked out the window.  There on my neighbors curb was this kitchen!  They saw trash, I saw potential.  I literally jumped out of my seat when I saw it!  We brought it home and then got strait to work, it really needed a lot of TLC.

After taking off all the nail polish with nail polish remover and cleaning it up a little with some wipes, my husband and I went to our local Lowe's to buy some paint.  I was thinking Doc McStuffins colors (One of my daughters favorite shows) with some chalk board paint for the sides.  My wonderful husband was actually the one who painted everything, but didn't it turn out great?

He even used some silver spray paint he already had to repaint all the handles.

There was only one thing missing.  The back splash of the kitchen with the water stain.  We didn't want to paint it, so we opted for a different approach and covered it with my handy dandy shelf liner.  The black and white pattern tied in the black chalk board paint on the sides very well, don't you think?

And just because I wanted to add my own touch, I added a hook inside the cabinet to hang some oven mitts, for those hot foods of course.  :)

Let's see a side by side Before & After picture....

The Break Down...

Actual Kitchen:  FREE
Paint: About $70
Shelf Liner: $4.50 on Clearance!
Total Coast:  $74.50

Keep in mind we bought a large gallon of paint for each color (which was probably too much) and a pint of chalk board paint and we still have a lot left over for any other future projects, so really it was a lot less.

These play kitchens run about $150-$200, so I think we really saved a ton with this road side freebie!

Have you ever picked up free furniture from the side of the road?  What was your best piece?
