A Clean & Functional Office....In Progress

I'm no organizing expert.  The whole reason I started this blog was to get myself motivated to get organized.  Not just clean, but to make my environment functional.  I really have learned a lot so far and I'm glad to go where I'm heading with this whole organization experience.

So when I started my Organized Desk project, I decided that I would keep things real and post the horrible before picture.

Warning:  What you are about to view might make you scream and cry out "Why?!" over and over again.  It's so horrible that I even thought twice to post it, but I know it's something that must be done.  Brace yourselves for this picture of my desk.....

Don't ask me why I have a Mayo box, because I don't know either...

And let's get a close up!

So there it is!  Thrown paper, wires sticking out every where, and boxes on top of boxes full of junk!  I don't have a junk drawer, I have a junk desk!  And just to prove it, here is a picture of the drawer of my desk....

Pretty clean, right?  Ok, not perfect, but it's better than the hot mess that is happening on top.  At least this drawer is being used properly and actually has some order.  It's used to house all my tech/computer stuff, like my camera, camera cords & charger, USB, external hard-drive, and my labeler.

It took me a couple of hours, but I finally was able to clean & start the process of organizing my desk!  Here is an after picture.

*Insert sigh of relief here*  A lot better! What did I do with all my time....and junk?  Here are the steps I took.

1) Cleared everything off
2) Cleaned & dusted desk
3) Sorted through papers and made three piles 1. Important, 2. Throw, 3. Shred

4) I then filed all the important papers into their proper places, but left any bills out that I needed to still pay.
5) Put things back where they belong.  I couldn't believe how many things had ended up on my desk that didn't belong there!
6) Set file basket on desk (I'll get to this in another post)
7) Organize magazines.  I went through every single magazine and decided which ones I wanted to keep and which I wanted to toss. I made sure to take my address off the toss magazines.
8) Set a home for them.

This is basically all I did, but it took quite a while.  Now that I cleaned and have some order at my desk, the next step is to decorate and organize a little more.  Oh yeah, and I still have that file cabinet to clean off.

Now one last view side by side.
